Prerequisite: Elementary and Junior High School instrumental classes; band experience The band is a marching unit much of the first nine weeks of each year appearing at football games, competitions, festivals, and civic parades. It is a concert group the remainder of each year studying and performing a wide diversity of musical styles. The band may be divided according to abilities as the year progresses.

Prerequisite: Junior high school instrumental classes and orchestra experience The orchestra meets as a string orchestra for the first nine weeks. The remainder of the year the group meets with both string and full concert orchestra instrumentation. The orchestra performs concerts, appears in festivals, and enters contests.

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Junior High Choral Director or placement audition with the High School Director This is the beginning chorus where the fundamentals of choral singing are introduced. The students learn a variety of music and musical styles and perform at selected concerts throughout the school year, both as a separate ensemble and as choir combined with the other school choruses. These selected seasonal concerts are required as part of the curriculum.

Treble Choir (Year; 1 unit) |

Prerequisite: Females only; enrollment, by audition or recommendation only This is a more advanced ensemble, focusing on a wider range of music and giving special attention to the further development of the female voice. This ensemble performs at choral concerts throughout the school year that are required as a part of the curriculum. Freshman girls, under special arrangements, may audition for this choir in 8th grade.

Prerequisite: Enrollment by audition or recommendation only This is the most advanced vocal ensemble in the school's curriculum, covering the widest range of musical genres from many cultures. This musical ensemble attends and performs at various festivals and contests throughout the school year; the ensemble will perform in seasonal concerts at the school as a part of the curriculum. Freshman boys, under special arrangements, may audition for this choir in 8th grade.

88941-88942 AP Music Theory (Year; 1 unit) |

Prerequisites: grade 11 or 12, recommendation of ensemble director or private instructor, concurrent enrollment in BHS Band, Orchestra or Choir, and consent of the instructor. Students will be required to purchase a workbook (text provided). This course is designed for students intending to major/minor in music education, music performance, music business or music therapy. The course is intended to cover the materials in the first two semesters of 100-level collegiate music theory, including scales, intervals, chords, modes, structure, rhythm, form, notation and compositional trends, and the historical rational for each. Students will be able to use included composition projects and arrangements in a music portfolio that can aid in college application, and be applied towards collegiate music course credit. The end of the year includes participation in the AP-Music Theory examination.

89010 Music Explorations (Semester; 1/2 unit) |

Prerequisite: None This class is for students with an interest in music who are not in a music performance class. The focus of the class will be contemporary music trends, music styles, composition, and listening. Students will analyze and describe music and learn to understand music as it relates to history and culture.
