About the Bloomington Business Academy (BBA)

The Bloomington Business Academy (BBA) program is designed for 9th through 11th grade students.  It is organized around building relationships in a smaller classroom setting.  Academic rigor and progressive work-site learning experiences prepare students for entry-level employment in the local job market and provide lifelong learning skills for higher education. 

 

The Bloomington Business Academy integrates work place competencies and career and technical education with core academic subjects in an interdisciplinary approach.  Students are block scheduled throughout the day and have the same team of teachers from year to year.  Enrollment in the Academy is based on past academic performance, an application process, and interview.

 

In addition to their core subjects, students will participate in career exploration their freshman year, job shadowing their sophomore year, and mentoring/internships during their junior and senior years.

01077-01078 Freshman Composition/Literature Essentials - BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerequisite: Membership in BBA
This class is designed to improve each student's individual reading and writing skills.  The curriculum is taught in a thematic unit and includes grammar, writing composition, spelling, vocabulary, and literature.  A small class size and a hands-on approach will be maintained for individual growth..
This class is treated as a basic level course for GPA calculations.

02027-02028 Sophomore Lit/Composition/Speech Essentials - BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerequisite: Freshman Composition/Literature Essentials - BBA; Membership in BBA
This class combines grammar, literature, writing, and speaking.  The student will participate in individual and group speeches and will examine all phases of the communication process. This course is designed to increase the student's formal and informal writing and reading skills
This class is treated as a basic level course for GPA calculations.

03027-03028 Junior Literature/Composition Essentials  - BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerequisite: Sophomore Literature/Composition/Speech - BBA; Membership in BBA
This course emphasizes various methods of communication and reading skills.  Short story, novel, drama, essay, poetry, technical writing and technical reading will be taught.  The student will build skills to complete a research project.  Small class size encourages group discussions. Co-enrollment with American Government-BBA is strongly recommended. 

 
This class is treated as a basic level course for GPA calculations.

Prerequisite: Membership in BBA
This class is designed to prepare students for Algebra Prep.  It reviews and expands arithmetic skills in the real numbers, whole numbers, fractions, decimals, metric and US Customary systems of measurement and problem solving 
This class is treated as a basic level course for GPA calculations.

Prerequisite: Basic Math I; membership in BBA
This course is designed to prepare students for Algebra through practical applications.  Ratios, proportions, percents, integers, rational numbers, solving equations and problem solving are among the topics covered.

21137-21183 Algebra Applications – BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerequisite:  Algebra Prep; Membership in BBA
Algebra Applications is a preparation for advanced mathematics, stressing both structure and development of problem-solving skills.  Students develop mastery of the real number system and the language and symbolism of algebra.  Equations, inequalities, polynomials, functions and graphing make Algebra both practical and vital for students.  Students will be expected to use hands-on applications of Algebra to demonstrate their knowledge.

21253-21254 Geometry Applications – BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerererequisite:  Algebra Applications BBA; membership in the BBA
Geometry Applications is a course designed to follow the BBA Algebra Applications class. This course will cover, but will not be limited to, a wide variety of topics in Euclidean geometry including parallel and perpendicular lines, properties of polygons, congruent triangles, similar triangles, circles, volume and area of solids, coordinate geometry, probability, and statistics. Geometry Applications is an application based course that focuses on how geometry is present in everyday life. Students enrolled in this course will use logical reasoning to analyze problems and develop strategies that will lead to effective solutions.

42427-42428 World History/Geography Fundamentals - BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerequisite: Membership in BBA
This course is intended to acquaint students with the major periods of the history of western civilizations and influences exhibited upon present ones.  Geographic skills include map work, location  of civilization and the non-western world.  It will also show connections between past events cities, major rivers, capitals and countries.  Students will achieve this through a hands-on approach.  
This class is treated as a basic level course for GPA.

43427-43428 American History Fundamentals - BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerequisite: World History - BBA; Membership in BBA
This course places emphasis upon the chronological discipline of history.  Units will cover the history of the western world from the first contact with Europe to colonization.  Alsodiscussed is the formation of the United States and the major events in our history up to the present.  The approach used to convey these topics is an integrated hands-on approach
This class is treated as a basic level course for GPA calculations.

44427 American Government Fundamentals - BBA (Semester; 1/2 unit)

Prerequisite: American History - BBA; Membership in BBA
The course will deal with the background, organization and operation of the central government of the United States.  Different forms of government will be discussed and compared.  Students will study state and national constitutions and how these impact on their lives.  The approach will be based upon activities and hands-on projects.

62117-62118 Intro to Business - BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerequisite:  Sophomore standing, Membership in BBA, Computer Applications - BBA
This course provides an orientation to the world of business in the American free-enterprise system for students.  The instruction is devoted to the various forms of business ownership (including entrepreneurship) and different phases of work in business, economic systems, advertising, banking, credit, insurance, income tax, keeping records, buying, and others.  Using information, coping with change, and developing skills in decision-making and conflict-resolution are a part of the course. In addition to providing an orientation to vocations, this class also  provides students with important computer keyboarding skills and covers topics in consumer education. This course meets the State Consumer Education requirement

61145-61146 Computer Applications - BBA (Year; 1 unit)

Prerequisite: Membership in BBA, Freshman standing
This course is designed to teach students the correct technique of the touch system at the keyboard.  Students will learn to use these skills by formatting personal and business letters, term papers, and simple tabulation problems.  Proofreading techniques are introduced as well as continued emphasis on spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Learn about software most widely used today in schools and businesses.  This class teaches skills needed to do graphics, create spreadsheets, databases and application skills that you will use in the business world.  Microsoft Office -- Word, Power Point, Excel, and Access are just some of the programs that will be taught.
