News and notes on Intercity high school football teams and their opponents for the final games of the regular season.

Decatur Eisenhower vs. Bloomington

Time: 7 p.m.

Place: Fred Carlton Field

Records: Eisenhower 1-7, 1-7 Big 12 Conference; Bloomington 7-1, 7-1

Radio: WJBC-AM (1230)

FYI: Bloomington, No. 9 in the Class 6A state rankings, shoots for its seventh straight victory on Senior Night. The Purple Raiders turned a 21-0 deficit into a 24-21 victory over Normal West last week. Bloomington junior wide receiver/defensive end Eric Furler is questionable because of a hamstring injury. Eisenhower’s first win came last week, a 12-8 victory over winless Urbana.

Quoting: “Last week has got to be a positive example of how well they (the Purple Raiders) can play when they get emotion behind them. But we’re a funny team. We have great surges on offense and defense, although the defense has been consistent all year. But we still have these letdowns. Any team that has seniors and it’s their last game you give them respect and stay focused coming in. We want to come out of the game healthy with game 10 coming up.” — BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer

Mattoon vs. Normal West

Time: 7 p.m.

Place: Normal West High School

Records: Mattoon 5-3, 5-3 Big 12 Conference; Normal West 5-3, 5-3

Radio: WJBC-AM (1230), periodic reports

FYI: Normal West tries to put aside last week’s heart-breaking loss to Bloomington. West and Mattoon each seems assured of a playoff spot next week regardless of the outcome. Junior Ross Schmillen will get his second straight start at quarterback for West after Todd Albert was lost for the season with a thumb injury. The Wildcats’ leading rusher, Darius Bell (714 yards), will play after missing the last two games for disciplinary reasons. Mattoon is coming off its biggest win of the season, a 23-16 victory at Champaign Centennial. Kyle Drummond paces the Green Wave with 1,011 yards rushing.

Quoting: “Mattoon is a team that always seems to peak at the end of the season. They don’t make mistakes and do a great job controlling the football. They’re a power team and play physical defense. We did a lot of good things last week. Our kids understand it’s important to get some momentum heading into the postseason.” — West coach Darren Hess

Normal Community vs. Danville

Time: 7 p.m.

Place: Danville High School

Records: Normal Community 8-0, 8-0 in Big 12 Conference; Danville 5-3, 5-3

Radio: WJBC-AM (1230), periodic reports

FYI: NCHS, No. 1 in the Class 6A state rankings, shoots for its first unbeaten regular season and undisputed Big 12 title since 1999. The Ironmen rank No. 1 in the area in scoring offense (36.7 points) and scoring defense (4.5). Danville has won its last three games by a 113-19 margin.

Quoting: “It will be a challenge for our players. We have a lot on the line. We’re going on the road at their place. They have a lot of enthusiasm for their team. They were 1-8 last year and now they’re going to the playoffs. Offensively, they’re explosive. They have a great scheme running or passing. Late in the year they’ve hit their stride.” — NCHS coach Hud Venerable

Central Catholic vs. Tolono Unity

Time: 7 p.m.

Place: Unity High School, Tolono

Records: Central Catholic 7-1; Tolono Unity 8-0

Radio: WJBC-AM (1230), periodic reports

FYI: Central Catholic, No. 6 in the Class 4A rankings, tries to bounce back from last week’s 13-10 loss to Prairie Central in a Corn Belt Conference showdown pitting undefeated teams. Now, the Saints face another unbeaten in Tolono Unity, which is No. 4 in Class 3A. The Rockets blanked previously unbeaten Breese Mater Dei 17-0 last week. Unity’s top threat is quarterback Dane Paul, who has completed 51 of 79 attempts for 742 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 1,044 yards and 14 TDs. Matt Correa also has rushed for 978 yards for the Rockets. Central tackle-defensive end Nathan Rebholz is probable after suffering a slight concussion last week. Bobby Moews is searching for his 100th career victory as the Saints’ coach.

Quoting: “They’re quicker than all get out. They run the wing-T and a lot of different option, and their quarterback is an outstanding football player. He’s got good feet and quickness. Their running backs are small, 5-6 or 5-8, but they run hard and quick and get off the ball. You’re going to have to play back-to-back tough games in the playoffs and face someone who runs the wing. We haven’t faced anything like that all year.” — Central Catholic coach Bobby Moews

University High vs. Mahomet-Seymour

Time: 7:45 p.m.

Place: Mahomet

Records: U High 3-5, 2-5 Corn Belt Conference; Mahomet-Seymour 5-3, 4-3

Radio: WJBC-AM (1230), periodic reports

FYI: Mahomet-Seymour needs a victory to clinch an at-large playoff spot and avoid waiting nervously on Saturday night to see if it is in when the Illinois High School Association releases the pairings. The Bulldogs, who are celebrating Senior Night, have outscored their last three opponents 132-27. Mahomet-Seymour’s John Porter, who is averaging nine-yards per carry, needs 160 yards rushing to reach the 1,000-yard mark. U High has won two of its last three games. Senior quarterback Tyler Cook has thrown for four TDs and run for three more the last three weeks for the Pioneers.

Quoting: “Our kids are treating it like a playoff game because it’s our last game, especially our seniors. Like the past few Mahomet teams they’re big up front and will pound you. They have size and speed and create a couple different problems.” — U High coach Kurt Olson

“They’ve got a lot of speed and just good athletes. It’s a dangerous football team. I learned a long time ago not to take anyone lightly, and we’ve never taken U High lightly. We’re not in the playoffs yet and this is a very important game. I’ve felt from the beginning this would be a tough football game.” — Mahomet-Seymour coach Tom Shallenberger
