BLOOMINGTON
-- The numbers spoke for Bloomington High School's
Valshun Powe: 21 carries and two touchdowns. Solid, but
not flashy.
But one number was gaudy -- 345 yards rushing.
The senior tailback completely dominated Decatur
MacArthur's defense, breaking the school single-game
rushing record by 29 yards in the Raiders' 28-7 Big 12
Conference victory at Fred Carlton Field.
"The young man is impressive," said BHS coach Rigo
Schmelzer, whose team won its sixth consecutive
conference title.
"Anybody who watches him play football knows that
he's a very talented kid. ... He is a kid that just does
not want to be stopped."
He made that statement true.
Powe averaged 16.4 yards-per-carry, had 8 carries of
10-or-more yards and finished with 4 runs of 40-or-more
yards.
"I give most of my credit to the offensive line, the
blocking on the outside and our fullback," Powe said.
"They did a great job."
After the teams traded punts on its first drives,
MacArthur received the ball on its own 13-yard line.
Using a combination of option, dives and screen passes,
the Generals needed 12 plays to march 87 yards. The
drive culminated on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback
Travis Garrett.
On their ensuing possession, the Raiders (8-1 overall
and in the Big 12) opened with the ball on their own
13-yard line. On its first play from scrimmage, BHS was
stuffed for a three-yard loss by Powe on an option left.
With the defense play tight to the short side of the
field, quarterback Brent Holtz called an audible, which
paid dividends. Running an option to the right side gave
Powe the extra space he needed to run for an 89-yard
touchdown run, tying the game at 7.
"Our offensive line gave me a good hole and I just
ran right through it," Powe said.
Following two insufficient drives, the Raiders
increased their lead to 14-7 after a one-yard plunge by
Holtz. The lead grew to 21-7 after a 10-yard touchdown
run up the middle by fullback Chris Jameson.
With a 14-point deficit, MacArthur began to rally.
Starting from their own 19, the Generals marched to the
BHS 10 where they faced a fourth-and-seven. The Raiders
seemed to escape the scoring opportunity after an
incompletion, but were whistled for pass interference,
giving MacArthur a new set of downs on the BHS five-yard
line.
However, the Generals were stopped on four
consecutive plays.
"That was real crucial," MacArthur coach Jed Kennedy
said. "We score there, it's a one touchdown
(disadvantage) late in the game. ... That was big."
Powe added a 30-yard touchdown run late in the
contest to seal the victory, and his school record.
BHS contained University of Illinois recruit Marquis
Wilkins, allowing him to just 100 total yards -- 23
rushing. Paul Cobb led the General attack with 93 yards
on 20 carries. Jameson finished six carries for 28
yards, while David Cook hauled in two receptions for 27
yards..
"It is important. It helps with home-field
(advantage), it makes certain that one of our goals is
reached -- that is a conference championship," said
Schmelzer, whose team has qualified for the playoffs 11
times in his 13 seasons.
"We go in with the same mentality we've had. These
kids have been to playoffs before. We understand what
we're facing as far as first-round (opponent). We
recognize that of the eight teams (in the quadrant),
five will come from conference. Our first-round
(opponent) based on odds will probably come from
conference."
